It was a rainy, wet and muddy day for Mountain Bike O-Cup #3 at Sir Sam’s in Haliburton, ON. Not even an epic rainstorm which delayed the race start by two hours, could slow down the speed, or spirits Team NCCH which saw 6 Athletes make the Podium. Logan B. and Liam C. kicked the day off taking the silver and bronze in the D Grade Boys race. In the D Grade girls race Addison M. took home NCCH’s solo Gold Medal. The C Grade boys race fielded 24 Athletes with 7 from Team NCCH. Ben G. landed on the podium in 2nd with Jacob K. 4th, Julian M. 10th, Greg M. 11th, Bailey M. 14th, Nolan W. 19th and David S. 20th. Jaxson V. moved up from C Grade to B Grade and continued his great season taking 3rd, with Chayse R. 9th, Sam M. 12th and Kyle M. 14th. Matthew P. moved up from B to Grade A and placed 15th.
It has been amazing to watch our Athletes improve from race to race. In the Master A Sport Men race Alex S. battled mud and rain to take 11th, Coach Amy captured the Silver medal in the Master A Expert Women race. In the Cadet Expert Boys race River W. was 5th and Antoine B. was 7th. There wasn’t a single Athlete, Coach, Parent or bike from NCCH that wasn’t covered in mud at the end of their race. Thanks to the organizers from Sir Sam’s who had a cleaning station set up to clean off all the bikes and the event staff to despite terrible weather were able to keep the event running. Thanks to all the Coaches and Parents that braved the elements to support our Team on the course, in the feed zone and helped other teams that needed an extra hand during the event. The terrible weather showed the strength of the cycling community at this event and how different teams came together and supported each other. At the end of the day despite the mud and rain all our riders crossed the finish line and had a great time at the event. Congratulations everyone!

It was a hot summer night for the second Kelso race of the year, which led to some hot action on the race course. The night started off with second place finishes for Luke C. in the youth race and Charlie S. in the beginner race. After dominating the sport field last week Matthew P. moved up to the expert race and continued to build on his earlier race taking first in the male 11-14 race. Antoine B., also racing in expert, took third in the male 15-18 category. Good luck to both of you this weekend in Quebec. Coach Mike V. also made the podium taking third in the expert male 40-49 category. In the sport race Jaxon V. continued his amazing start to the year taking first in the male 11-14 category with Ben G. and Julian M. taking sixth and seventh. Jamie H. moved up to sport from novice and took 6th in the male 15-18 category. Coach Amy grabbed first in the female 40-49 category, and in the male 40-49 category Coach Kyle crossed the line in 23rd and Coach Jeff came in 31st. In the novice race, Sofie G. kept her winning streak intact taking first in the female 10 and under race. I see an upgrade in someone’s future. In the male 11-14 race NCCH riders Nolan W. (7th) Liam C.(8th) and Rhys C. (14th) all had great races. And in the 50-59 race Parent Rider Barry showed the young kids the old guy still has some gas in the tank finishing first in the male 50-59 category. It wasn’t the biggest field of Athletes for NCCH but the NCCH supporters in attendance more than made up for their small numbers led by the booming voice of Coach Fred. Thanks to Coach Colin for prepping our Athletes to take the course before the race. Lastly to all our riders keep up the great work you are doing, everyone in the NCCH family is so proud of all of you. May 24, 2022, Kelso Mountain Bike Race Series 2022 Event Number 1……A RETURN TO MASS START RACING AT KELSO!!!!!!!
It was a great night to kick off the 2022 Kelso race series and NCCH came to the course ready to race. It was obvious from the end results that all the training and amazing coaching our athletes are receiving is paying off in a big way. In the Novice Race, NCCH had six (6) Athletes in the top 20 overall, and several riders had great results in their categories. In the female 10 and under category Sofie G. stared her racing year off in a big way taking first place. Addison M. continued the strong start to her race season finishing second in the female 11-14 category. In the male 11-14 category NCCH had Logan B. (4th), Julian M. (6th), Liam C. (8th), Caleb A. (11th) and Rhys C. (12th), five riders in the top 12 and we are looking forward to them building on their early season success. Jamie H. had a strong race taking 4th in the male 15-18 category. Coach Barry took first in the male 50-59 category but had an overall time slightly slower then Logan and it appears the student is becoming master. In the sport race, Matthew P. missed first place overall by 2.7 seconds securing himself a second-place finish overall and a second-place finish in the crazy fast male 11-14 category. Also in the male 11-14 category and building on his early success at the O-Cups and Youth Road races, Jaxson V. finished 3rd and Rohan B. rounded out the field crossing the line in 11th. In two great showings by some of our female riders, Maria M. took silver in the female 15-18 category and Coach Amy won the female 40-49 race. Also repping NCCH blue was Jeff B. in the male 40-49 category finishing 32nd. The expert race saw two NCCH riders in the top 4 overall with Brady S.(3rd) and Antoine B.(4th). Brady’s finish saw him take 1st in the 60+ category, man does he look young for his age, and Antoine’s finish saw him place 2nd in the male 15-18 category. In the female 15-18 category Sophie B. and Vanessa M. took second and third respectively. In the male 40-49 category NCCH was well represented with Coach Cyril(5th), Coach Mike V.(6th) and Coach Fred (15th). A special shout out goes to Coach Mike B. who got bit by the race bug and took 5th in the male 50-59 category. In probably the fiercest competition of the night Luke C. represented NCCH in the kids race and finished second overall and in the highly competitive beginner race Charlie S. finished tied for second, way to go boys, the future of NCCH is bright. Congratulations to all our Athletes who represented NCCH on the race course and thanks to all the coaches and race day support at the event. It was a great start to the Kelso race series season and we hope to see our riders build on their early season accomplishments. On May 29, 2022, athletes from NCCH and Team Hamilton competed in the Quinte Criterium road race held at Centennial Park in the City of Quinte West. The day featured some fierce racing with some unbelievable photo finishes. The Elite 4 Men category saw some of the toughest racing of the day with three athletes including NCCH’s Joe F. and Antoine B. leading a breakaway group of 4 athletes, a crash in the last lap saw 3 athletes race for the honors in a sprint to the finish. Joe F. took second place in a photo finish with Antoine B. taking third a mere 7 seconds behind. Alexander M. finished in 19th. Alex M. was in a group which featured 18 athletes crossing the line in a massive photo finish, 4th place to 21st place was separated by 1 SECOND. Talk about a close race. In the Elite 3 Mens category, Thomas P. aka Coach Thomas, took the gold in another photo finish and Zeke M. placed 21st. Maria M. raced to a 6th place finish in the Elite 3 Women’s category and Vanessa M. placed 12th in the Elite 1 and 2 Women’s category, this was another tight race that saw 1st place and 12th place separated by 31 seconds. In probably the craziest photo finish of the day, Chris ERNST racing with our sponsor team Xspeed United, finished 12th, this race saw a one second difference between first and 22nd. A kudos goes out to the race officials that were able to sort out the results of that finish. These were some amazing results and we can’t wait to see what the future brings for our athletes. A big Thank you to Cyril as the Lead for this project, and Coach Thomas
