European Cycling Tour of Assen 2021

In 2019 NCCH took a team of 16 cyclists and 4 support staff to the Jeugdtour - European Cycling Tour of Assen at the end of July.  The Jeugdtour (Assen)  is the largest tour of its kind and is held each year in Assen, Netherlands for youth from 10-18 years of age.  That was the 55th year of this tour and it boasted more than 800 registrants from 22 different countries.

This is a 6 day tour consisting of a Prologue, Criterium race, Classic Road Race, Time Trial, Cobbled Omloop race and a final Criterium race so it has something for everyone and provides many learning opportunities for all riders..

The 2019 NCCH athletes ranged in age from 11-18 with the majority being U17 and U19.  Here are some of the comments that we received from both the athletes and the parents:

- This project showed me a lot about the aggressive European racing style. I learned about racing in pelotons of over 120 girls on tight roads and cobble stones, cornering in the grass and fighting my way to the front of the pack. The stage race gave me confidence in my riding abilities and left me motivated to train hard for next year's race!

- This was an incredible experience for our son. He has had some success in Canada but this opened his eyes to international racing at a very competitive level. It took a few stages to gain confidence and believe in himself that he could compete at a very high level. It was also great to strengthen his independence and learn to take care of himself and others (physically, mentally and emotionally). An experience that he will remember for a lifetime.

- I learnt a lot on this project (on and off the bike) and it was fun riding with a lot of people on skinny roads and cobbled roads. I liked meeting riders my age from other countries.

- I really enjoyed racing in big groups against racers from all over. The competition was unlike anything you could experience in Canada because there were so many people and the racing was so fast. I learned a lot and had tons of fun both on and off the bike. I am super grateful to have had this opportunity.

- I really liked racing in big fields and experiencing racing on cobbles. The racing was so different from the racing in Canada, so I learned so much every race I did.

- Highlight of my cycling career so far

This was the first time that NCCH attended this specific event, and our plans to attend in 2020 were cancelled due to COVID.

NCCH has been sending athletes into Europe for the past 3 years and they are excited by the opportunities that this has provided for the athletes.

Planning for this type of project takes a lot of organization and as a result, plans are currently underway for the 2021 project and we are currently accepting expressions of interest from riders who would like to participate in this iconic event.  The 2021 race will occur from August 2nd to August 7th.

If you are interested in attending this event as an athlete or as a chaperone, NCCH is currently accepting expressions of interest to logisticsdirector@ncch.ca.  Please include some details about yourself and your racing history.  Limited spaces available!  Deadline for receipt of expression of interest is December 31st.

The second MTB TT day was cool, crisp and fast. Some new PB times were set across all three waves and the lap time data will be very valuable in assessing riders and planning for winter training. And, it was fun and positive for everyone's health - physical and mental - to be outside and amping up the heart rate.

Thanks for giving your all and at the same time being kind and respectful to hikers and walkers. Many people on the trails commented positively about NCCH members and the benefits of being on the trails with organized events for youth.

Valley MTB TT Success

Jointly promoted by OfCourse Promotions & NCCH, the Valley MTB TT was a great success!

We came, saw and rode the Valley on a beautiful Sunday morning. More than 35 riders challenged the technical MTB TT course, with a mix of trail and single track and more than a fair share of bumps & stumps. Thank you to our volunteer coaches who marshalled around the 2.9k loop and thanks to our riders who represented NCCH in a positive community manner with all the hikers, runners and dog walkers.

NCCH Manager Rick Lee said "Our MTB coaches came up with the course, as they wanted a course that would challenge the riders technical skills, as well as speed and endurance. We reached out to OfCourse Promotions who ran the successful Gravel T series, to conduct the Valley TT,  and it went like clock work !

We achieved our objectives by providing a safe, fun, and  'race' type environment, for athletes to post times on a technical course.  These times, as well as the Gravel T are a 'base line', and will form part of the assessment for the different competition levels (A, B or C) going forward"

Back at it this Sunday October 25 for another push for personal best times. Have you registered?
